Meg Dendler’s journey as an author is as vibrant as the quirky cat who inspired her award-winning book. In 2013, her debut chapter book, Why Kimba Saved the World, earned the Moonbeam Bronze Award for Best First Book, Chapter Book.
This recognition not only highlighted her unique storytelling but also set the stage for a fantastic career as an author of middle-grade novels and children’s literature. From her creative process to the challenges she’s overcome, Dendler’s story is one of determination, inspiration, and joy.
A Moment of Affirmation
Winning a Moonbeam Award meant the world to Dendler. For an indie author, it was more than just a shiny medal—it was validation that her work was making an impact. “It was a fantastic affirmation that I’d written a book worth sharing and reading,” she explains.
In the world of indie publishing, where authors often work outside traditional systems, awards like ours can help their books stand out. “There are few ‘gatekeepers’ in indie publishing, so having won an award like this is a big credential for potential readers,” Dendler adds. “Having the medal on the book cover tells readers, ‘This book is worth it!’”
A Celebration to Remember
The moment Dendler found out she had won is something she’ll never forget. “I was screaming!” she recalls with a laugh. But her celebration didn’t start right away. “There was actually a delay in being certain because my internet was having issues. So I saw the letter of congratulations, but it was about thirty minutes before I could look up the winners and feel it was true.”
When the reality sank in, Dendler couldn’t contain her excitement. “There was much jumping and cheering in my little basement office,” she says, reflecting on that life-changing moment.
Inspired by a Quirky Cat
The inspiration for Why Kimba Saved the World came from Dendler’s own pet cat. “It was inspired by the bizarre cat we hand-raised and all her strange antics,” she explains. Watching her cat’s unique behaviors sparked an imaginative idea: What if her cat was actually an alien? That question led to a short story, which eventually became a full novel—and not just one. “That led to this book… and then to five more in the series, along with two canine companion books,” Dendler says.
Kimba’s story launched a series that has delighted readers young and old, showing how everyday experiences can become something extraordinary when paired with a vivid imagination.
How Kimba Came to Life
Dendler’s writing process for Why Kimba Saved the World was as dynamic as the story itself. “Kimba’s book went through several iterations, from a short story to an early reader to a smaller chapter book and finally to a full middle-grade novel with sequels,” she says.
Rather than sticking to a rigid outline, Dendler allowed the story to develop naturally. “I joke that I’m a plantser,” she explains, blending planning with spontaneity.
Dendler’s work also involves a lot of exploration and creativity. “I just kept what-iffing events that could take place,” she shares. Characters took on unexpected roles, and scenes came to life organically. “Tidying up can come later in the process,” she says with a smile.
Pushing Through Challenges
Getting Kimba’s story published wasn’t easy. Dendler spent years submitting the manuscript to publishers, facing multiple rejections. Eventually, she decided to self-publish, but the journey came with its own set of challenges. “I knew very little about self-publishing, but I had some connections in the industry and called on one of them to be a book guide,” she says.
Dendler put together a team to handle the technical aspects of publishing, but it was an investment. “It was pricy,” she admits. However, she was determined to create a book that matched the quality of traditional publishing. “Winning a Moonbeam for this novel was confirmation that it was all worth it,” she says.
A Heartfelt Message for Readers
At its core, Why Kimba Saved the World has a beautiful message. “The theme is about love and family and protecting those you care for,” Dendler explains. Kimba’s journey to save the world is fueled by her devotion, and Dendler hopes that message resonates with her readers.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Authors
For anyone dreaming of becoming an author, Dendler offers simple but powerful advice: Read, write, and connect. “Read a lot of whatever you want to write,” she advises. Understanding your genre and audience is crucial, especially when writing for children.
She also emphasizes the value of feedback. “Let other experienced people read what you write and give you feedback,” she says. Writing, according to Dendler, takes hard work. “Don’t try to find shortcuts.”
